Grocery Store Wisdom
Tom and I love (okay, we don't mind) visiting the grocery on the south side of town where we live. Not only do many of my students work there (providing me with help instead of the other way around) but people are just so darn friendly. A couple weeks ago, while we were checking out, two men in their 50's shot friendly comments back and forth smiling. One of the men was our bagger, the other a customer who walked away happily having seen his hold friend. It turned out that the man had lost his ability to walk in a war and just received some form of device that allowed him to walk again. He could not have been more thankful, and his friend more thrilled to not only have seen his old friend, but to have seen him walking. When I went to the same Kroger yesterday, a man walked up to my cart, peered down at Bridger and said, "how old is she?" "He's three months" I replied. To which the man sincerely replied, "Better love him hard and fast 'cus he'll make you a grandma before you know it". So for his first holiday season, I think we'll give him some good hard love. What more could a little one wish for? And the grocery store lessons don't stop there. As I began my day yesterday, a student of mine, who was my bagger asked if he could go to his locker to get "the frog". Hmm, that sounds fishy. Then he explained how when Bridger and I left the store, the frog hang-toy I had on his backpack fell off. He grabbed it for us and brought it to school to return. So there sat Bridger's little frog toy on my desk reminding me of him and also making me thankful for good kids. Cheers to the grocery store that provides us with more than nourishment. What a great town eh?
